Routines are a description of our values. In order to honor Pattern-Method's values of community, creativity, and confidence, we have begun our Studio Night. Every other week we meet either at Pattern-Method studio (a.k.a my studio) or Shimmer studio (a.k.a. Rebecca's studio) and we create for the sake of creation. We experiment and share, make and connect, learn and support. My dream is to someday move our Pattern-Method studio into a larger space so we can experiment bigger and create more diverse connections with others. But don't assume bigger is always better. There is something special about creating this routine that is currently only shared between a few. It is a stand for something meaningful and good. It shows the value we have for ourselves and our creative journeys. It allows us to make art that can either be shared or can continue to live as a memory in our sketchbooks. No matter how big or small, studio night creates something bigger than the things we make in those 2 hours. It supports creativity. And maybe, just maybe, it inspires an awesome pattern design.
Are you interested in sharing our Studio Night? Are you interested in making your own? It can happen anywhere and with any amount of people. You could do it by yourself in your kitchen. You could meet a friend in a coffee shop. You can create an artist cooperative and rent a space. What is most important? That you start. Now.
We have started using Creative Bug to give us a jumping off point to start. Sketchbook Explorations by Lisa Congdon has been a lot of fun. Or, head on over to our workshop page and check out some projects there. Take photos, draw, paint, collage... it really doesn't matter. Just make it routine. Schedule the time and make an effort. Share what you do. It matters.
